What Is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a cosmetic procedure that enhances the size, shape, and overall appearance of the breasts. It’s most commonly done using implants—either silicone, saline, or structured versions—but it can also be performed with fat transfer for those looking for a more natural, modest boost. Whether you’re looking to restore volume after pregnancy, correct asymmetry, or simply feel more confident in your body, breast augmentation can be tailored to fit your unique goals.

Dr. Said uses the latest surgical techniques and implant technology to deliver beautiful, natural-looking breast augmentation results with a strong focus on safety and long-term satisfaction. Every detail—from implant type and placement to incision location and scar care—is customized to your anatomy and preferences. With modern advances like soft cohesive gels, nanotextured surfaces, and smaller incisions, today’s breast augmentation offers more comfort, faster healing, and results that move and feel like your natural body.

Which Type of Breast Augmentation is Right for You?

Dr. Said offers a full range of implants from leading manufacturers, including Sientra, Mentor, Serene, and Motiva Implants. Dr. Said offers:

Saline Breast Implants: Saline implants have been around for a long time, and they remain a popular choice today. This FDA-approved implant style is a favorite among patients who are seeking timeless and affordable breast implants in Seattle. Saline implants do not come pre-filled; An empty silicone shell is placed inside the breast pocket and then filled with a sterile salt-water solution to your desired size. The newest and most advanced of these are structured saline implants which contain multiple chambers for the fluid. That allows them to move and feel much like a silicone implant, while keeping the peace of mind that comes with saline filling. Dr. Said is a premier provider of structured saline implants by Serene Implants.

Breast Augmentation with Fat Transfer: Not all breast augmentation procedures require implants. Dr. Hakim Said is one of Seattle’s breast fat transfer experts. Using liposuction, fat from other parts of your body can be removed, purified, and then injected into the breasts to boost their size and shape. This treatment is particularly attractive for women who want a modest increase in their breast size or who want to avoid implants entirely. Although the amount of volume is more limited, the effect is durable and does not require replacement or maintenance.

Types of Breast Implants

At Said Plastic Surgery, we understand that no two patients are the same. That’s why Dr. Said offers a wide selection of FDA-approved breast implants designed to fit your body, lifestyle, and goals. Here’s a closer look at the options we offer:

Motiva® Breast Implants

Motiva implants are one of the most advanced options available today. They’re known for their soft, natural feel and smart design that makes breast implant recovery a little easier. These implants are made with a unique gel that moves like real breast tissue, and the outer shell is designed to be gentle on your body and lower the chance of irritation.

Some of the things patients love about Motiva:

  • They feel soft and move naturally with your body.
  • The shell is hypoallergenic and made to reduce friction and inflammation.
  • They’re durable and long-lasting, with a low risk of complications.
  • The design allows for smaller incisions and less disruption to your tissue.

Motiva is a great choice if you're looking for high-tech implants with a more natural vibe—and a smoother healing process, too.

Feature  Benefit
SoftSilk/SilkSurface  Hypoallergenic, biocompatible shell
Ergonomix® Gel  Moves naturally with your body
Less than 1% complication rate  Fewer concerns long-term
Minimal muscle coverage  Shorter recovery, preserved muscle strength

6th Generation Silicone Gel Implants

The latest generation of silicone implants, sometimes called "gummy bear implants," are a little firmer than traditional silicone, but that’s what helps them hold their shape over time. Even if the outer shell wears down, the gel inside is so cohesive that it stays in place.

These implants are a great pick if you want a natural look with a little extra durability. They also come in both round and teardrop shapes to suit your body type and aesthetic goals.

Generation Key Benefit
5th Gen Softer gel, cohesive feel

Silicone Breast Implants

Silicone implants have been around for years, and they remain one of the most popular choices, especially for women who want a natural look and feel. These come pre-filled with silicone gel and are available in lots of shapes and sizes.

Silicone feels softer and more like natural breast tissue than saline. Most patients choose round implants, which add fullness to both the top and bottom of the breast. There are also teardrop-shaped options, which give a more subtle slope that mimics the natural breast shape.

Saline Breast Implants

Saline implants are filled with sterile saltwater after they’re placed in the breast. That means the size can be adjusted a bit during surgery, which gives your surgeon more flexibility.

Some women prefer saline because they like the peace of mind that comes with a saltwater fill—if the implant ever leaks, your body just absorbs the fluid naturally. Dr. Said also offers structured saline implants from Serene, which have a special inner design that helps them feel more like silicone.

Key reasons to consider saline implants:

  • They're a little more budget-friendly.
  • They're adjustable in the operating room.
  • Structured saline versions feel more natural than traditional saline.
Type Features
Standard Saline Adjustable size, low cost
Structured Saline

More natural feel, multiple chambers

Sientra® Breast Implants

Sientra implants are only available through board-certified plastic surgeons, and Dr. Said is proud to be a Platinum Provider. These implants are filled with a special cohesive gel that helps them hold their shape really well, while still feeling soft to the touch.

One thing that makes Sientra stand out is its 20-year warranty, which is one of the longest in the industry. They're also competitively priced, so you get top-tier quality with extra peace of mind.

Why patients choose Sientra:

  • Long-lasting and shape-holding cohesive gel

Breast Implant Shapes

The shape of your implants can make a big difference in how your results look and feel. Here are the two main options:

  • Round Implants: These give more fullness to the top and bottom of the breast, which many women love for the added cleavage and balanced look.
  • Teardrop Implants: These are shaped more like a natural breast—with a gentle slope on top and more volume at the bottom. They're great if you want a softer, more subtle enhancement.
Shape Description
Round Adds fullness to the upper and lower part of the breast
Teardrop

Mimics the natural slope of the breast for subtle volume

Breast Implant Texture

Implants also come in two surface types—smooth or textured. Each one offers different benefits, depending on your goals and anatomy.

  • Smooth Implants: These feel softer and can move a little more freely within the breast pocket. They’re the most commonly used and tend to have a more natural feel.
  • Textured Implants: These are designed to stay in place better, which can be helpful if you’re going with a teardrop shape that needs to hold a specific position.
Texture Pros
Smooth Softer feel, moves more naturally within the breast pocket
Textured

Helps reduce movement, often used in shaped implants

Breast Implant Profile

Profile refers to how far the implant sticks out from your chest when you’re standing up. It affects how your breasts will look from the side and how much projection you’ll have.

  • Low Profile: Offers a wider base and a more subtle look—great if you want a gentle enhancement.
  • Moderate Profile: The “just right” option for many patients. It balances natural shape with noticeable fullness.
  • High Profile: These give the most projection, which can create a fuller, more dramatic look, especially in the upper part of the breast.
Profile  Best For
Low Subtle enhancement, broader chest frames
Moderate

Natural-looking results, balanced projection

High  More dramatic projection, enhanced upper fullness

Implant Placement

Where your implant is placed matters just as much as the type you choose. Dr. Said will look at your body type, lifestyle, and goals to recommend the best option for you.

  • Subglandular (Over the Muscle): The implant sits just under the breast tissue. This usually means a shorter recovery and easier future adjustments, especially for women with more natural breast tissue.
  • Subpectoral (Under the Muscle): The implant is placed beneath the chest muscle. This can help give a more natural slope and hide implant edges in thinner patients.
  • Dual-Plane Placement: A mix of both techniques. The top part of the implant is under the muscle, while the bottom is under the breast tissue. This gives a natural shape and feel, especially if you want a bit more lift or have mild sagging.
Placement Type Description
Subglandular Placed over the muscle; faster recovery, easier adjustments
Subpectoral

Under the chest muscle; helps hide edges in thinner patients

Dual-plane Partially under the muscle; combines benefits of both

Combining Breast Augmentation With Other Procedures

Breast augmentation is often part of a bigger transformation, especially for women who want to restore or enhance multiple areas at once. Combining procedures can save time, reduce overall recovery, and help create a more balanced, harmonious result.

Some of the most popular procedures to combine with breast augmentation include:

  • Breast Lift (Mastopexy): If your breasts have started to sag or lose shape due to aging, pregnancy, or weight changes, adding a lift can reposition and reshape the breasts while the implants add volume.
  • Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty): Often done as part of a Mommy Makeover, a tummy tuck flattens and tightens the abdominal area while implants restore fullness to the chest, helping you feel more confident head to toe.
  • Liposuction: Removing stubborn fat from areas like the waist, thighs, or back can enhance your breast results by highlighting your curves and creating a more sculpted silhouette.
  • Fat Transfer to the Breasts: For women who want a subtle increase in breast size or want to fine-tune results after implants, fat grafting can add softness and shape using your body’s own natural tissue.

Breast Augmentation Safety

Breast augmentation is considered a very safe procedure. As with any surgery, however, there are certain risks involved. Infection is always a risk factor with any surgical procedure. So is anesthesia. Other breast augmentation surgery risks include:

  • Bleeding
  • Fluid accumulation
  • Nipple or breast sensation changes
  • Skin wrinkling over the implant
  • Leakage or rupture of implants
  • Pain from capsular contraction
  • Scarring
  • Faulty implant position
  • Capsular contraction - formation of tight scar tissue around the implant

There is always the possibility of needing breast revision surgery if the patient experiences issues with the original augmentation procedure. Revision surgery is also an option if the patient decides they want a different type of implant or want to change their breast size.

Should complications arise, rest assured that Dr. Said is covered by CosmetAssure. CosmetAssure is the gold standard for complications insurance and provides a financial safety net for the patients of board-certified plastic surgeons who offer it. So even in the unlikely event of complications when you're getting a breast augmentation, or any other elective aesthetic surgery, you’ll be covered. CosmetAssure relieves the stress and uncertainty from unexpected medical expenses related to post-surgical complications. With CosmetAssure, patients enjoy the peace of mind knowing their surgeon has taken the precautionary steps of covering them in the event of an eligible loss.

How Much Does Breast Augmentation Cost?

The cost of breast augmentation depends on various factors, including the type of implants chosen. The national average cost of breast augmentation surgery is approximately $6,600, while fat transfer breast augmentation is around $10,000. Breast augmentation is a personalized procedure. The surgical technique, anesthesia fees, and surgeon’s expertise can all affect pricing. Dr. Said will discuss costs with the patient during the consultation and provide a price quote detailing the costs associated with surgery for you to review. Because breast augmentation is considered an elective procedure, insurance will not generally cover it. There are exceptions when the augmentation is done in connection with a mastectomy. Financing options are available.

Breast Augmentation Candidates

Breast augmentation is a versatile procedure that can address a variety of concerns, making it a popular choice for many individuals looking to enhance their appearance. You may be a good candidate for breast augmentation if you:

  • Desire Fuller Breasts: Whether you've always wanted larger breasts or have experienced volume loss due to pregnancy, weight loss, or aging, breast augmentation can help you achieve your desired look.
  • Have Asymmetrical Breasts: If one breast is noticeably smaller or shaped differently than the other, breast augmentation can provide a more balanced appearance.
  • Are in Good Physical Health: Candidates should be non-smokers or willing to quit smoking before and after the surgery, and they should not have any medical conditions that could interfere with healing.
  • Are Emotionally and Mentally Prepared: It's important to have realistic expectations and understand both the benefits and potential risks of the procedure.

Contraindications for the procedure may include if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, certain medical conditions such as diabetes or autoimmune diseases, or allergies to the materials used in the implants. Ultimately, a thorough consultation with Dr. Hakim Said will determine whether breast augmentation is the best option for you.

The Breast Augmentation Procedure

Dr. Said provides you with pre-operative instructions to prepare for breast augmentation surgery. On the day of surgery, you will meet with a nurse and anesthesiologist.

After taking your vitals and changing into a dressing gown, Dr. Said meets with you to go over any last-minute questions. Markings are drawn on your skin to prepare for surgery. This helps ensure a good cosmetic result. While you lay on the operating room table, an anesthesiologist administers drugs that make you feel sleepy. Your vitals are constantly monitored during surgery. Once you are asleep, Dr. Said makes a small incision, often in the breast crease.

He dissects the breast tissue to create a pocket for the implants to go in. Different surgical techniques may be used. For example, if you choose to have under the muscle or dual-plane implants, the pectoral muscle is cut and elevated from the rib cage to make room for the implant. Over-muscle implants do not require cutting the pectoral muscle. Breast augmentation surgery takes approximately two hours. The implants are inserted into the breast pocket. The incision is neatly closed. You will awake in a comfortable recovery room. Most Seattle breast augmentation patients return home the same day.

What to Expect During Breast Augmentation Recovery

You can return to light social activities and work within a few days to one week. Driving may be resumed when you feel confident that you have a full range of motion. Please avoid heavy lifting, and wait at least six weeks before returning to normal exercise. Short walks are recommended, starting on the day of surgery.

Most discomfort subsides in the first three days. Pain medication is prescribed for a more comfortable recovery. Patients with tight skin may experience more post-op discomfort than those with lax skin. Implant placement also plays a role. Under muscle or dual-plane implants require cutting the pectoral muscle. This creates more trauma during surgery.

Over-muscle implants do not affect the muscle, which means less post-op discomfort. Swelling after breast implants is normal. You may be asked to wear compression garments or a special bra to ease swelling for several weeks. Bruising may also occur. It takes approximately two weeks for bruising to subside if present. None of this will be obvious to others. You may easily wear clothing to conceal your chest during early recovery.

Your Breast Augmentation Results

It is normal for implants to ride high on your chest at first. Your breast implants will feel tight and look abnormal at first. Do not worry, this is temporary. It takes several months for implants to settle down.

This is colloquially known as the “drop and fluff”. The breast tissue relaxes, allowing the implant to expand in the breast pocket. As swelling subsides and the breast tissue relaxes, your breasts will look more natural and feel softer. If you have lax skin, this process happens faster. If you have tight skin, it can take up to one year. Once the breast implants settle into place, most Seattle Breast Augmentation patients are thrilled with the results.

Breast Augmentation Recovery Timeline

One to three months: Breast implants ride high and feel hard; Swelling is prominent; Scars are dark red and raised.

Three to six months: Implants start to settle down into a natural position; They no longer ride high on the chest; Swelling subsides; Scars start to lighten and flatten.

Six months to one year: Breasts look and feel natural; Swelling is absent; Scars turn light brown to pink.

One to two years: Breasts feel like they are a part of you; Scars fade to a fine line that is hardly visible; Light therapy for scars may be done to lighten scars if needed.

Breast Augmentation FAQs

While most patients associate implants and breast augmentation, they are not always the same. Breast implant surgery is a type of breast augmentation offered by Dr. Said. Autologous fat transfer (a dual procedure combining liposuction and natural fat injections) is another type of breast augmentation.

The breast augmentation results last a long time, but are not technically considered permanent. Your breasts may change in contour over time due to aging, weight changes, or pregnancy. Breast implants eventually need to be replaced, with the average lifespan being approximately ten years.

The surgery itself is not painful since it takes place under general anesthesia. Most patients rate the pain during recovery as moderate. You should expect some soreness or aching that can last several weeks. Dr. Said will develop a customized recovery plan for you that includes ways to minimize discomfort in the days following surgery.

The answer to that question depends on your clinical presentation. A breast lift (mastopexy) is for women with sagging breasts. While it can improve the shape of the breasts, it does not add volume. Breast augmentation enhances the breasts so they appear bigger or fuller. Dr. Said may suggest combining procedures if you have laxity and want to add volume.
